Scott Sterling, 45, is an American detective, ex-CIA Beijing and Bangkok, and now lives over one of the bars in Bangkok frequented by American vets of various wars.
An American woman shows up at the bar; a woman who believes her father, a special forces team leader on highly classified missions into Laos, was murdered by a Thai woman in the early 70’s, and she wishes to clear his name and bring the Thai woman to justice. Scott reluctantly takes on the case and agrees to search for the woman not knowing he is being set up.
He tracks down and interviews surviving members of her father's special forces team. The special forces team members have their own reasons for stopping Scott's investigation, and once he ignores warnings from friends and strangers as well as ex-CIA colleagues, he understands the very real danger he is in. And the more he digs the more he realizes nothing is what it seems; then or now.
The special forces team members are themselves being hunted by the Vietnamese sons of the man they betrayed during the war. The Vietnamese sons are also hunting for the same mysterious Thai woman who, along with the American woman's father and his team members, betrayed their father during the Vietnam War; yet she seems to have vanished. When Scott gets too close to the truth, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a decades-old vendetta, unable to trust anyone, and in the sights of a highly trained hunter-killer.
While working on this case, Scott receives a mysterious note from a Chinese woman he had fallen in love with in Beijing; until he learned that she worked for the Chinese government’s version of the CIA. His mistake caused him a great deal of anguish emotionally and much of what he had achieved professionally. Under very different and extremely dangerous circumstances, they will meet again.
She is working undercover for the Chinese espionage agency as before and is living with and spying on the powerful man who has ordered Scott's death. Her warning places her in danger, and when she is kidnapped by a desperate special forces member Scott must join with ex-CIA colleagues as well as with the man who wants him dead in an attempt to save her. And he can only save her by finding the Thai woman who is the clue to the mystery.

My interest in a novel leaps into unbridled enthusiasm when it's set in Asia, and particularly Southeast Asia. I'm also specifically interested in the Vietnam war and the participation by neighbouring countries, ignorantly or knowingly ignorant. Author Dean Barrett, a long-time working expat and former member of the U.S. military, digs into the dirt of covert operations history to set off a modern-day girl hunt in Permanent Damage. His lead character, Bangkok-based detective Scott Sterling, himself a former CIA spook, takes on the task required by a client. Only Sterling is not the only one looking. So there's conflict on the horizon as well as multiple fatalities. That's not the only fun though.
What I enjoyed more than the story are the reflections of Asian culture, Thai in this case. The author endows the novel with a rich vein of local colour and language, and highlights how different things are in ordinary everyday Thai life, much of it very amusing in contrast with, let's call it, western culture. It would be an education for readers unfamiliar with just how differently, really different, life runs under the surface here. Having spent a lot of time in Southeast Asia and Bangkok in particular, everything the narrator reveals rings absolutely true.
I don't think you'll be permanently damaged by experience.

PERMANENT DAMAGE edition by Dean Barrett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I've read just about every "mystery" novel where the central location is Bangkok just because it's an area I know a little bit about and because it is an area where a lot of captivating stories can be spun. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to Permanent Damage, but I think with possible one or two exceptions, it is the best I have read. A fairly complex but yet easily believable story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I just downloaded Skytrain to Murder hoping it will be just as good.
Dean does it again. I didn't want it to end. Love the adventures in the "Thai Way". So right on and fun. Takes me back. What's next Dean?
Well written mystery that will appeal to "asia hands", by someone who obviously knows the territory. A good read for the airplane trip headed "that way".
Not bad at all. Scott Sterling is a great character. My biggest regret is that there are only two books in the series.
Very well written , as usual , by this author .
Brings back lots of memories of places I`ve been as well as Thai logic .
An insight as to what could go so wrong in another culture.
Dean Barrett has been one of my favorite authors for a few years now, and this book doesnt let me down. The are a few things which are still typical of books coming out of Thailand or maybe just Dean's publisher, not sure, are the many grammatical and editorial errors. There are some words in the book where you are like what the? Cowherd is in the book many times, which I took to mean coward, hehe, just one example, so if you read this book be prepared to do some detective work on your own. Some of the characters have names that sound a like, "Winny-Winston" "Winters", etc. so sometimes I was left wondering who was who. Still a good book, with a good plot, that keeps you interested and intrigued with what is going to happen next right until the last page.
